Few people put their bodies through the sort of punishment that football players endure every week—during practice and at game time. Former National Football League (NFL) wide receiver Jerry Rice says that chiropractic care has been instrumental in keeping him in good condition, both on and off the field. He was named the NFL’s Player of the Year in 1987 and retired 20 years later, having broken almost every wide receiver record in the NFL. Named MVP in Super Bowl XXIII, he attributes his athletic longevity to “vigorous exercise and chiropractic adjustments.”

“I believe in chiropractic and I know that it works. You probably know about my long and successful career in football, and I’m flattered by the testimonials to my durability. Football is a very rough and vigorous sport,” Rice says. “I took some vicious hits from players nearly twice my size. Thankfully, I had the durability to withstand these tackles, or I would never have succeeded or lasted as long as I did. Chiropractic was the key to keeping me in the game.” He continued, “My first experience with chiropractic care was right before the 49ers were to play the Bengals in Super Bowl XXIII. A couple of our players were injured and a chiropractor turned things around. I quickly became a believer, and ever since, I have had the benefit of chiropractic care.” He added, “Chiropractic made football great for me. I was at my best and was always at 100 percent.”

Rice had chiropractic adjustments twice a week while he was training to help him recover from the regular assault his body took on the playing field. “If I had everything in alignment, I knew I could play my best football,” he said.  Seeing how it helped Rice, his teammates were soon convinced that chiropractic was better than traditional care involving drugs. “I wanted to set the standard within football,” he said. “I knew if chiropractic helped me put up outstanding numbers, it could help my teammates do the same.”

After his successful football career, Rice then went on to a new physical challenge: learning to dance like a professional. Rice related what taking on this new adventure was like. “‘Dancing With the Stars’ was every bit as exhausting and challenging. Though not nearly as brutal as football, it required many hours of practice I had aches and pains that I’d never had before. Again, chiropractic made the difference, and kept me dancing and in the competition.”

Rice wants to get the word out to as many people as possible regarding the benefits of chiropractic care. He says, “The game of life requires the edge that chiropractic provides. Chiropractic care allows me to lead a very active lifestyle. I have seen its value, both personally and professionally, among my friends and teammates.”

  • WHAT IS LASER THERAPY?

Laser Therapy is the use of specific wavelengths of light to treat painful and
debilitating muscle, bone and joint conditions. Watch a couple videos here for
more details about this excellent new approach to pain reduction.

  • HOW DOES IT WORK?

Light energy enters the damaged cells and stimulates inter-cellular activity. This reduces pain in the area of injury and speeds recovery of the damaged cells.

  • WHAT CAN I EXPECT DURING A TREATMENT?

Laser Therapy is a painless treatment that usually lasts several minutes. Patients may experience a comfortable sensation at the point of application.

  • WHAT CAN I EXPECT AFTER THE TREATMENT?

Most patients see positive results in within just a few treatments. The swelling at the site of injury and pain is
usually greatly reduced and there is a rapid relief of pain. Chronic conditions can be
controlled with regular treatments. Although no therapy works without fail
for all patients the M6 laser exhibits a high rate of satisfaction on the
patients that we have applied it too.

  • WHAT DOES THE LASER TREAT?
MLS Laser therapy is a safe, comfortable and effective treatment for the following conditions:

If you have ever experienced a sprain, you know how inconvenient it can be to locate some ice and a bag to put it in so that you can apply it to your injury.  After all, not everyone is “lucky” enough to get hurt at a home and have a bag of frozen peas on hand when it happens…

Even if you just have sore muscles from a strenuous workout, experts advise that you apply ice to relieve pain and speed recovery.  Biofreeze is a pain relieving gel that provides the same effect as ice, in a convenient, portable form that doesn’t tie you down.

Biofreeze is an analgesic that is useful for treating not only sprains and sore muscles, but also arthritis and other types of joint pain.  It comes in gel, spray or roll-on form, and is a type of cryotherapy (cold therapy).  Its active ingredient is menthol (from the mint family of plants), which causes your brain to interpret the nerve signals being sent as a sensation of cold, triggering a reduction in inflammation.

The cold therapy of Biofreeze works by causing ligand molecules to attach themselves to your nerve’s cold receptors, which effectively helps to numb the area, interfering with pain signals traveling to the brain.  Its menthol also induces vasodilation, which increases blood flow to the injury (a benefit over icing the area, as icing has the opposite effect), allowing cellular waste products to be swept away more efficiently and for healing oxygen and nutrients to be delivered to the cells.

Other herbal ingredients included in Biofreeze are Ilex Paraguariensis (also known as Yerba mate, a plant native to South America with antioxidant properties), Arnica, Calendula, Aloe, Boswellia, Green Tea, Burdock, Lemon Balm and vitamin E.  All of these have been used for centuries in treating tissue injuries such as bruises, sprains and strains.  Camphor, another ingredient in Biofreeze, has both numbing and antiseptic properties.

Our masage therapist at Sheldon Road Chiropractic & Massage Therapy can massage the gel into your skin (or apply it with your personal roll-on or spray) up to four times a day.  It can also be useful before any type of therapy, such as chiropractic care or physical therapy, so as to relieve pain that may interfere with you getting the most out of your treatment.  Although it does not require a prescription, Biofreeze is not sold in stores.  Instead, it is often times available at many chiropractors and other health care practitioners who carry it for the benefit of their patients. Sheldon Road Chiropractic & Massage Therapy carries three main types of Biofreeze products for our patient's convenience; we offer a tube, roll-on or spray. Come by our office to try this excellent pain relieving product!

Foundation for Chiropractic Progress Points to Chiropractic Care as Primary Approach for Management of Low Back Pain

CARMICHAEL, Calif. – September 14, 2015 – A recent study, Epidural Corticosteroid Injections for Radiculopathy and Spinal Stenosis: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis (Annals of Internal Medicine 8.25.15), concludes that epidural corticosteroid injections for radiculopathy and spinal stenosis are ineffective for long-term pain relief and have no effect on long-term surgery risk. In response, experts at the not-for-profit Foundation for Chiropractic Progress (F4CP), point out that utilization of chiropractic care is documented to yield improved clinical outcomes and patient satisfaction, and a 28-percent reduction in the likeliness of surgery when used as a primary approach in the management of spine-related conditions.

“Chiropractic care is a conservative, evidence-based approach, which includes manual and/or instrument spinal care, postural advice, exercise, stretching and general lifestyle counsel – providing patients with a non-invasive, long-lasting solution for optimal pain relief,” states Gerard W. Clum, D.C., spokesperson, F4CP, noting that low back pain ranks as the leading cause of disability worldwide, with 31 million Americans experiencing back pain at any given time. “As new research continues to surface citing the inadequacy of some treatment options, such as epidural corticosteroid injections, it is time for the public to reexamine their care plans and consider safer, more effective options, including chiropractic care.”

Research confirms epidural corticosteroid injections are still the most commonly performed intervention in the U.S. for management of chronic low back pain despite the documented inefficiency, harmful risks and associated costs, which can span upward of $600 per injection. The care provided by a doctor of chiropractic provides patients with high-quality, cost-effective treatment, with cost per episode recognized at 40 percent lower in comparison to patients who initially receive medical care. A doctor of chiropractic receives a minimum of seven years of education, which includes clinical patient management and a passing score on national and state boards.

“Today, a growing number of health care professionals understand the value of chiropractic care in successfully addressing lower back pain,” states Dr. Clum, who references the F4CP white paper, A Safer Approach to Long-term Relief from Back Pain: Understanding the role of chiropractic care as the first option in providing drug-free, non-invasive effective back pain management.
